I think the reason most players switch to first person is due to the fact the player model would almost always block their view so it would be cool if the fixed that problem, would also be cool if they added first person but i think its an ok compromise for better triversal and fighting mechanics. However the OP is right, the amount of space that the game allows you between the camera and the toon is tiny. I've been playing for 2.5 years and rolling the mouse wheel has always just switched from first person to third person.
